Photographs of Theophilus Wylie Library
Rare books
The Theophilus Wylie Library is located on the second floor of the Morton C. Bradley, Jr. Education Center. Wylie’s grandchildren donated his library to Indiana University with the following message: “This collections as it now stands represents the working library of Professor Wylie during the first thirty years of his connection with the University. It is placed here by his grandchildren in the belief that it has a story to tell of the type of culture and scholarship for which the university stood in the days when it was young.”

Photograph of The Great Minimal Surface sculpture
Sculpture

Photograph of a sculpture created by Morton C. Bradley, Jr., in 2004. This sculpture is composed of Schoen minimal surface gyroids. The Great Minimal Surface begins Bradley’s Minimal Surface series, the most innovative and distinct series of sculptural expressions in the artist’s career. A minimal surface is a surface with a mean curvature of zero, meaning that the maximum upward curvature and downward curvature are equal and opposite. A zero mean curvature creates fluid, saddle-shaped forms, often called gyroids, which can be fitted together in honeycomb structures. The initial work concerning minimal surfaces was pioneered by German mathematician Hermann Amandus Schwarz in 1865, and expanded upon by Alan Schoen, a NASA senior scientist. Instead of completing the complex formulas to generate the surfaces, Schoen hypothesized what surfaces certain formulas would produce, then hired a friend and fabricator of Bradley’s, Harald Robinson, to create a sculptural model. Robinson shared the plastic casts he created with Bradley as they fostered their personal and working relationship. Bradley, inspired by exploring such a new form towards the end of his life, embarked on the creation of his own minimal surface piece.

Photograph of Archimedes sculpture
Sculpture

Photograph of a sculpture created by Morton C. Bradley, Jr., in 2003. This sculpture is a composite form. Composed of twelve halved icosidodecahedra, twenty halved cubeoctaheadra and thirty halved octahedra, Archimedes is a complex, composite form. Built around a core of a truncated icosahedron, all sixty-two colors that were used by Bradley in previous works are present in this culminating sculpture. Demonstrating the classic Bradley color aesthetic, cool wintry tones shift to warm to velvety jewel tones and cool again as the sculpture rotates. While each of Bradley’s sculptures employs a distinctive set of color variations, Archimedes is the only piece painted using all of Bradley’s color options.
